crayon color

While cleaning out the craft cabinet today my daughters and I discovered that we had a large amount of small bits of old crayons. We decided that they needed a new life and I suggested that we make colorful circle crayons. The idea being that their little brothers would be delighted when they arrived home to find such a fun surprise waiting. At 7 and 9 my daughters are quite proficient these days. Having made grocery lists, shopped and cooked meals this week from their kids cookbook from the library, they were confident in their abilities. I set them to the task and kept them company all the while getting my chores done and tidied the house.

They peeled the old crayons, organised colors, placed them in the tray pots and after looking up the temperature of the oven put them in and watched. It wasn't long before the wax had melted and blended colors. We took them out together and let them cool. The finished round crayons turned out wonderful! Arlo and Cedar were quite pleased and enjoyed coloring bright beautiful pictures after returning home.

I've always like this craft. The utility of using something old, reuse, and recycling. It was easy for my kids to do themselves and made a nice gift to give. Add in bright colors...perfect!

Oh, I used to do this with my older girls, I'll have to go through Sophie's crayons. She'd love this! Thanks for the reminder.

lovely! And to think I just donated a big box of surplus crayons to the thrift store! I haven't done this since I was young (I remember leaving them out on a hot metal slide in the sun instead of in the oven-- it really worked!)

These turned out great, I am sure the boys liked them very much. I think my Amelia and your girls would get along well!

What a great idea!

I love the colours. I have all these little broken bits of crayons from the kids breaking them when they used them - I thought it was such a waste.

What temp do you set oven at and do you have to grease the tins?

I loved reading about the skills your daughters are learning. Imagine all that two 7 and 9 year old girls are capable of doing! Amazing, and I think it's great they have so much encouragment. The crayons really are beautiful.

Thanks everyone. And I so love to hear about your sweet daughters (and sons!) as well.

Anne-Our popped right out with greasing and not. A few minuted in the freezer after they have set will release them as they shrink. The over temp that we used was 300 and they melted fast so stay with them.
